Neurobiology

Before the body can correct itself, it must know where it actually is.

Rebuilding postural perception and proprioception.

Scoliosis is not only a structural issue. It can also involve the way the nervous system interprets joint position, muscle activity and the relationship between the spine and pelvis.

Targeted sensory and behavioural exercises help the patient notice tension, release and movement, then use this information for conscious correction and, over time, more automatic control.

Feeling straight and being straight are not always the same thing.

Addressing the perception error in a different way.

A child may genuinely feel that the spine is straight while an observable curve remains. When passively corrected, the new position may initially feel wrong.

This is why therapy does not rely on the instruction ‘stand straight’. The nervous system needs useful sensory information that helps it locate the body more accurately in space.

The nervous system does not hear an angle. It responds to tension, change and movement.

Scientific precision also changes the language we use.

Everyday commands such as ‘straighten up’ or ‘tighten your stomach’ can be too vague. Proprioceptors register local stretch, muscle tension and the speed of change — not an abstract geometric instruction.

We therefore use cues the body can act on, while geometric measurements remain tools for clinical assessment and communication between professionals.

Instead of a vague instruction, use a stimulus the body can answer.

Removing empty commands from therapy.

The patient learns to notice concrete information: whether a muscle responds quickly or slowly, how fatigue develops and how the joints move. This creates a better basis for changing movement correlations at cortical and subcortical levels.

A person is not a robot built for geometry.

Training in a way that respects human biology.

The nervous system evolved to respond to needs, motivation, safety and the environment — not to calculate angles. Therapy uses meaningful movement and biological feedback to pursue a measurable improvement in body geometry.
